【Making】 「Azikazin Play World」 Episode 2: Giving Up Weekends for Game Production!!

From May 22 (Thu) to May 25 (Sun), 2025, Azikazin Magic World participated in the Korean game exhibition 《PlayX4》, organized by the Gyeonggi Content Agency and KINTEX, which ran for 4 days.

Azikazin Magic World, a Korean creative group that showcases content inspired by game and animation culture, presented an exhibition of their works along with 「Azikazin Play World」, an interactive experience where visitors could play directly on-site.

「Azikazin Play World」 is a 15-minute horror, puzzle, and art game with low-poly visuals set in a liminal space. The Azikazin Editorial Team prepared a three-part series of behind-the-scenes stories, offering opportunities to discuss with game planners and developers they have collaborated with for the 《PlayX4》 game exhibition.

Episode 2: Giving Up Weekends for Game Production!!

Then, could you explain the first step of 「Azikazin Play World」, which you, Game Director Jung Jaesoon, took charge of planning?

Since I work at a company, I had to give up all my after-work hours and weekends to work on the 「Azikazin Play World」 project. Moreover, with only about three months left until the presentation, I started thinking about creating a compact yet impactful experience within a small game. At the same time, I wanted to incorporate Azikazin’s music and sound.

 

So, instead of a game with quick player interactions, I considered a viewing-focused game that could be developed in a short time, something like 「Pineapple on Pizza」.

Lionclad
Normally, Jaesoon, who would have been resting on weekends, came to the Azikazin studio. To make it feel a bit like a break, he always brought high-calorie snacks. Thanks to that, we could work while enjoying delicious food.

I heard that 「Azikazin Play World」 was designed with a playtime of about 15 minutes. Was there a specific reason for setting a target playtime and proceeding with the planning and development?

Since it’s an exhibition game that won’t be released, I hoped that visitors sitting at the computer for a demo could reach the ending with just a little effort.

I structured it so that collecting items from three stages and bringing them to the central hub would gradually fill the quiet space with sound. I set each stage’s time to about 5 minutes, which determined the target playtime. From the start of serious game development, I worked with developers Han Changhyuk and Joo Jihyun.

The game’s art style seems to evoke nostalgia while also feeling somewhat eerie. Art Director Lionclad and 3D CG Artist Lee Sungmoon, how did you interpret and develop Game Director Jung Jaesoon’s planning content?

 

Lionclad
Jaesoon set the game background as a liminal space and suggested a low-poly art style from the early days of 3D graphics, with unnatural, shimmering light effects to evoke a strange sense of horror.

 

Following that, I set the NPCs for each stage as Tra→Kids! (Gata, Waewaeng, Kkamajaya) and designed them with a slightly eerie yet cute feel. Since it was a completely different approach from Azikazin’s recent style, it felt fresh and fun.

In the early stages when planning and concept art materials were coming in, there were conflicts between the plans and concept art, and since it was the beginning, things weren’t always clearly defined. In such cases, I’d proceed with production on my own and submit it. It would come back, and we’d go back and forth a few times to refine the focus. Once the focus was set, the work pace picked up.

Moogia and I focused on integrating the Azikazin worldview with the game, while Sungmoon and Jaesoon continuously interacted from their respective roles, refining the game by focusing on the player’s experience.

For the first time in 「Azikazin Play World」, we could converse with the Tra→Kids!! As the narrative designer, Moogia, how did you approach the integration of the Azikazin worldview with the game?

 

Moogia
I set the background of 「Azikazin Play World」 as an abstract world created by the Tra→Kids!. A stifling space where each character hides with their inner struggles. This was both a setting to reflect the liminal space atmosphere and the initial game planning, but it also progressed smoothly because it connected with the stories we’ll share in future Azikazin Magic World activities with Jujubee.

Moogia
The first character, 「Gata」, is depicted as someone who has shut off communication with headphones, while 「Waewaeng」 and 「Kkamajaya」 are portrayed as characters struggling with unaccepted loss and confusion. To match the game’s meaningful atmosphere, I avoided direct expressions and wrote abstractly, almost like songwriting, to reveal the personalities of 「Gata」, 「Waewaeng」, and 「Kkamajaya」.

It seems the ultimate goal of 「Azikazin Play World」 is to resolve the Tra→Kids!’ issues and complete the music by collecting CD items as rewards. Could the core of this game be considered the music that is completed this way?

 

Lionclad
Yes, that’s right. Since the reward of this game focuses on appreciation, I thought it would be fun to add a slight twist to that appreciation. The melody heard for the first time in the game feels mysterious, but when the music is completed at the end, it gives a warm and fantastical feeling. I also tried to capture the characters’ sense of liberation in the music.

 

Everything revolves around one main melody heard first, with all music and sounds completed around it. Each stage features the main melody newly arranged like a theme song, and the ambient sounds were tuned to avoid clashing with the main melody’s key.

Moogia
The resulting track, 「3CD, Swing Tree」, which plays at the ending, is being prepared to appear in a different form in Azikazin’s upcoming full-length album, which we’re working on now.

After giving up all after-work hours and weekends and enduring three months of intense game production, the date of the game exhibition finally approached. I’m curious about the scene at 《PlayX4》, where Azikazin participated, and the setting of 「Azikazin Play World」.
