Announcement: Release of the Rhythm* Pocket! episode featuring “Dorephin Shopping Center,” a track from Azikazin Magic World’s upcoming studio album.

Azikazin Magic World has unveiled the track “Dorephin Shopping Center”—to be included in their first full-length album 《Memory Overdrive》, scheduled for release in January next year—through a new episode of Rhythm* Pocket!

Rhythm* Pocket! is a rhythm game–style live performance series where Jujubee dances to the music. What makes it especially fascinating is that each performance is created by manually charting the notes and recording the gameplay itself.

The Azikazin editorial team has also prepared behind-the-scenes comments from Lionclad, who produced this episode, along with commemorative photos from the Rhythm* Pocket! shoot—so please take your time enjoying both the episode and the extras.

Lionclad

Dorephin Shopping Center is music that gives you that exciting feeling like you’ve arrived at a shopping center. (I always get cheerful no matter what song is playing when I go shopping.) I imagined Tra→Kids and Jujubee wandering around, building fun memories. And when the drums come in, I made it so that it feels like a wide-open, refreshing vibe, as if watching the kids from afar.

This set also has a bunch of fun stories behind it, so let me introduce a few!

I got really into making arpeggios with a step sequencer, and I especially loved the one made with a vintage piano instrument sample. (This vintage piano has been featured in the Labs+ sample pack too. It’s called Clipped Wing Piano, where I drastically reduced the sustain and release so that the sound cuts off sharply as soon as you release the key, creating a unique piano sound.)

The fun part is that this set was created by experimenting with various interesting methods using just this one sound sample.

First, I used two layers with a cycle (where the sound alternates each time you press) to trigger the set, and with the note repeat (roll) function, holding down this layered pad gives a feeling like a woodwind trill, so I pressed it wildly and did some free playing.

Then, I assigned the End (the point where the sample ends) to the Q-Link fader on the MPC 2500, and as I raised the fader while playing, the overall sample length gradually shortened, making the sound playing from the step sequencer bouncier and more popping. I also used note repeat here to add more fun sonically along with improvisation.

Finally, using the many output terminals on the MPC 2500, I sent only this arpeggio sample to the 1/2 out instead of the main out, so I could apply effects only to the desired sound on the SP-404MK2 and do knob playing.

This Dorephin Shopping Center set was really fun because I could try all these various approaches with just one sound sample!
