On August 23, “Candy Blue Magic Hole Flip Phone,” a remix of KiiiKiii’s third track on EP 5, “Candy Pink Magic Hole Flip Phone,” from the perspective of Azikazin Magic World, was released.

It must have been a special feeling, since this was your first collaboration with a K-pop artist from a purely musical perspective, right?

Lionclad

KiiiKiii team first reached out after seeing our performance at “Asian Pop Festival” and said they were impressed by it. Since this was our first collaboration with a K-pop artist, we had a lot to think about when shaping how to make this project.

I heard you changed the concept from “pink” to “blue,” and even bought an actual Magic Hole yourself for reference. Is that right?.

Lionclad

We shifted the concept from the hot-feeling “pink” side to focus instead on the cool, liberating feeling you might get from the blue night sea or a seaside convenience store at night. We brought in “blue,” a core color of the Magic Hole, and combined it with Azikazin’s signature “Nostalgia Blue,” and renamed it “Candy Blue Magic Hole Flip Phone.” We ended up buying six Magic Holes to let the members and us directly experience its unique sensation. We’re also planning to develop games specifically for this Magic Hole later.

In the beat-making process, there are unique attempts like breakbeat influences and special MPC techniques.

Lionclad

We kept the original Digicore sound minimal, then layered and sampled a B-BOY breakbeat with heavy distortion. For the beat-splitting sections, especially, I used the Roll technique on the AKAI MPC XL, inspired by Taso’s method. I met him recently—he’s an Oakland-based artist in the footwork genre.

What did you focus on most in the vocal arrangement, effects, and lyric adaptations?

Moogia

I started by removing some parts from the packed top line of the original song so it would feel open and cool over the breakbeat, like the sea breeze at night. I applied Universal Audio’s Thermionic Culture Vulture distortion to the vocals for a cool but textured break in the density of sound. I also sang with more force than usual for a cleaner, straighter tone. It was also a lot of fun to play with KiiiKiii members’ vocal samples using a kaoss pad effect I usually use on my own voice.

The connection between music and visuals can’t be missed. What were your thoughts in matching them in this project?

Lionclad

Like I said before, we took the images we got from the original track and remixed them into an Azikazin-only style. Since we already know Kiho and Soomin’s visual concept and style, we made it as stylish and fashionable as possible.

Moogia

We also changed the line “I know you love me” to “Everyone loves KiiiKiii,” and arranged it so KiiiKiii members appear in the film at the drop moment. The film also makes their appearance feel like a reveal, which is the one part I’m most satisfied with. Plus, the split-screen cuts that sync with the beat and the appearances of Kkamajaya, Gata, and Jujubee are highlight points.

As you said, it was surprising to see KiiiKiii take part in this film. In most cover projects, the original artist usually doesn’t directly participate, so I’m curious how this came to happen and what the behind-the-scenes story was.

Song Kiho

At first, Azikazin didn’t expect KiiiKiii to be directly involved. After we shared what we made and discussed what we could create together, KiiiKiii team was the first to suggest it would be fun to bring KiiiKiii into the film. So it was unexpected and unique—because it’s not common for the original artist to be directly involved in a remix cover. It made the project feel different, and we felt the pressure to make everything come out just right.

During the KiiiKiii stays… project, our whole team could really feel how carefully KiiiKiii’s members and KiiiKiii’s team respected us throughout the process. I felt the same way, too — honestly, I wanted to put in the same level of care, maybe even more, so we could give back to them even better.
