Last June, Azikazin Magic World traveled to Tokyo for 《POP-UP PLAY STORE IN JAPAN》 and 《tsuchifumazu Party》. The members arrived on June 17 and returned to Korea on June 29 after wrapping up the pop-up and their performance. During their nearly two-week stay, which marked the collective’s first activities in Japan, they sat down with NEUT Magazine for a mini interview.

The original interview was published on NEUT Magazine ’s Instagram. It is now presented here in English so that more readers can enjoy it. Read on for the members’ reflections on their first activities in Japan, along with more stories from their time in Tokyo.

NEUT Magazine Mini Interview Release Announcement

NEUT
Could you begin by introducing yourselves?

Azikazin Magic World
Hi, we’re Azikazin Magic World, a media-mix creative collective based in Korea. There are five of us: Lionclad on art direction and beatmaking, Moogia on vocals and songwriting, Lee Sungmoon on 3DCG, Song Kiho on creative direction, and Park Soomin on spatial design and merchandise visuals. We each have our own roles, but in practice, all five of us work together to create each project.

What drives Azikazin Magic World creatively?

Azikazin Magic World
The memories of playing online games with friends when we were kids are what really drive our work. We still treasure the excitement we felt back then, as well as the moments when games and characters brought people together. Those memories continue to form an important foundation for every new project we create.

NEUT
At 《POP-UP PLAY STORE IN JAPAN》, held in Shibuya this June, you not only sold merchandise but also presented a booth where visitors could try the games for themselves. What do characters and games mean to you?

Azikazin Magic World
If we were to describe Azikazin Magic World’s worldview as a village, we would think of the characters as the residents who live there. Games serve as a gateway that allows our audience to actually step into that village. Through the games, we hope they can experience the sounds and visuals within this world more deeply.

The character group 《Tra→Kids!》 feels like an important part of Azikazin Magic World’s worldview. Did creating these characters lead to any changes in the way you make music?

Azikazin Magic World
We had already been making music before the worldview of 《Tra→Kids!》 took shape. But once we started developing the world of 《Tra→Kids!》, music also began to feel like another form of expression through which we could shape that world. Characters, music, and games are all different ways of creating the world of Azikazin.

NEUT
You visited Japan for the pop-up and other event appearances. What moments or memories stand out to you?

Moogia
We were busy preparing merchandise for 《POP-UP PLAY STORE IN JAPAN》 right up until the day before we left. We were still packaging 《Tra→Kids!》 keychains together on the flight to Japan (laughs). It wasn’t easy doing that while sitting shoulder to shoulder with barely any room to move, but looking back, it remains one of our most memorable moments. We remember thinking, “We’ll probably never have an experience like this anywhere else.”

Lionclad
When I was riding the subway in Japan, I saw the map and couldn’t believe how complicated it looked. I can’t read hiragana or katakana, so it felt like I was looking at the map of some massive AAA open-world game (laughs).

Song Kiho
“Gyoza and coffee.” I know that might sound a little weird, but it was definitely the most memorable thing I had during this trip.

There’s a place called FIL# in Nishihara, Shibuya. On a slightly chilly day with some light rain, I took a bite of gyoza and had a sip of coffee, and that moment really stayed with me. I was listening to Rei Harakami’s 「June」 at the time, and somehow the song became tied to the atmosphere and the memory. It made me want to return to Tokyo someday.

Finally, is there anything you’d like to say to your fans and readers in Japan?

Moogia
We make the news and four-panel 《Tra→Kids!》 comics on the official Azikazin Magic World website available in Japanese as well, so this visit held a special meaning for us. It felt like an opportunity to connect more closely with the fans in Japan who have been following our work.

Moogia
At 《POP-UP PLAY STORE IN JAPAN》 and 《tsuchifumazu Party》, we got to meet some of those fans for the first time. There were so many moments when it really hit us: “The work we’ve created really has reached fans in Japan.” Everyone welcomed us so warmly, and it became an experience we’ll never forget.

We hope we’ll have the chance to return and meet even more of you in Japan!
